DYNAMIC TREAD
Dynamic Tread is a triptych media artwork. Sitting behind the main reception of Hankook . The artwork honours the pioneering research Hankook Tire is undertaking to develop dynamic tyre treads that respond and adapt to changing weather and road conditions in real-time.
Made from a large-scale matrix of cylindrical glass nodes, with embedded LED arrays, the artwork analyses live weather data to create complex choreographies of light. The patterns evolve and represent the changing tire treads as weather conditions shift outside.
For this project, I did a lot of prototype work. We wanted to get the effect we will have on a long wall with only a small section that could be transported overseas to present to the client at HankookTires in Seoul.
The challenge was to get as close as possible of the final render, without the possibility to produce the final parts. With a combination of 3D printing, Glass, and Aluminium parts, I was able to propose an easily customizable unit if we desired to change elements (different Aluminium finish, different glass finish, different LED Color temperature, and Pitch) during the presentation with our client while keeping the great quality finish look of the prototype.

I really enjoyed designing and assembling the light units and produce the prototype unit that was a final quality finish.
