LATENT FACADE
Latent Façade is a project that explores the idea of capturing images, using computer vision. Cameras will capture movement and images around the building during the day, which will be transcripted into Hexagonal patterns.
When nighttime arrives, using bespoke, generative algorithms, the artwork samples a library of recorded visitor movements randomly selecting one ‘trace’ at a time and using it as a seed for an evolving display.
Based on the work of Sir Nevill Mott who first described ‘latent image”, the cameras during the days are the eyes and the artwork.
During the night, the artwork becomes the memory.
In this project, the design process of the light units was a challenge. The aesthetic of it had to be as minimal as possible but still needed to incorporate complex geometry, to be able to diffuse the light the right way and to be strong enough to be installed outside. A lot of prototypes were made to find the most appropriate design, to be effective and efficient to produce.
